India’s Supreme Court sought responses from the Election Commission and central government on October 5 over petitions alleging that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar took decisions without the other commissioners’ approval. The bench declined to immediately suspend or restrain Kumar, saying it needed responses and verified information before intervening. It said decisions found to violate the legal requirement for unanimity or majority agreement could later be annulled. The proceedings include a petition by Rakesh Kumar Singh and a related challenge by Shailendra Mani Tripathi, amid scrutiny of the commission’s electoral-roll revision process.
