Eritrea’s Foreign Ministry said on October 1 that it would sever all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia in response to Addis Ababa’s diplomatic measures. Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry announced that it would close its embassy in Asmara and declared ten Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa persona non grata, giving them 48 hours to leave. Ethiopia accused the diplomats of activities threatening national security. Eritrea rejected Ethiopia’s accusations and accused its neighbour of pursuing hostile policies, including training and arming Eritrean opposition groups. Ethiopia’s statement said it remained committed to peaceful dispute resolution.
