Iran Announces Executions of Two Men Arrested During January Protests in Mashhad

Iran's judiciary announced on September 30 that Ali Hemmati Sistani and Majid Nikandish, arrested during the January 2026 protests in Mashhad, were executed at dawn. It said the Supreme Court had upheld their death sentences. Authorities alleged involvement in January 8 incidents in Mashhad's Tabarsi district that killed four security personnel. The announcement did not specify the exact capital charge, trial branch, hearing dates or sentencing date. It said the defendants and their lawyers attended proceedings, but did not identify the lawyers or publish details of their arguments.
