Tunisia’s Top Court Upholds 34 Convictions in State-Security Case

Tunisia’s Court of Cassation rejected 44 appeals on the merits and two on procedural grounds in the conspiracy against state security case, leaving convictions against 34 people intact. Human Rights Watch said the final sentences range from five to 45 years and described the ruling as the defendants’ last avenue to overturn the convictions. Amnesty International said those convicted include lawyer Ayachi Hammami, opposition politician Ahmed Nejib Chebbi and activist Chaima Issa. Both groups alleged serious fair-trial violations, including defendants appearing remotely and being denied physical attendance.
