IDF Says Strike Killed Hamas Nukhba Commander Who Raided Re’im Base

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival 2007 panorama of Gaza City, with mid-rise buildings, a road and the distant sea, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes; geographical context, not the October 2026 strike scene.

The Israel Defense Forces said on October 16 that an airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip two days earlier killed Maher Walid Omar al-Husseini. The military identified him as a Nukhba cell commander in Hamas’s military wing and said he infiltrated Re’im Base in Israel during the October 7 massacre. According to the IDF, he had recently advanced attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops. The IDF also said he had attempted to restore Hamas’s capabilities, describing these efforts as part of his recent activity.
