IDF Says Gaza Strike Killed Hamas Commander Who Helped Hold Israeli Hostages

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Francis Frith’s archival 1857 view of Gaza Old Town, with a minaret, low stone buildings, palms and prickly-pear cacti; historical geographic context, not a depiction of the October 2026 strike, its target, hostages or the city’s current condition, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

The IDF said on October 14 that an aerial strike the previous day in the Gaza City area killed Momen Ahmad Salameh Ay, a commander in Hamas's military wing. The military said he took part in holding Israeli hostages in captivity in the Gaza City area during the war and assisted commanders of Hamas's Gaza Brigade. It said he had recently advanced attacks against Israeli troops and civilians and attempted to rebuild Hamas's capabilities. The IDF described those activities as systematic violations of the ceasefire and said its forces remained deployed according to the agreement.
