21 secondary schools in France's Rhône area were closed on Monday, with lessons held remotely, as student protests disrupted classes. Education Minister Édouard Geffray had estimated on Sunday that 400 to 500 high schools nationwide would suspend classes fully or partly on Monday because security conditions were not met. The protests concern teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings. Local prefectural orders prohibit processions and protest gatherings from 06:00 to 18:00 within 100 metres of the affected Rhône schools, while organisers have called for further demonstrations on Tuesday.
