Brazil’s Senate said incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro will contest the October 25 presidential runoff following the October 4 first round. Lula, of the Workers’ Party, is seeking re-election during his third presidential term, after returning to office in 2023. Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party, represents Rio de Janeiro in the Senate and is seeking the presidency for the first time. Lula’s running mate is former São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin, while Bolsonaro’s is federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar, a former Alagoas prosecutor.
