Brazil closed first-round polling in its general election at 17:00 Brasília time on October 4, with counting beginning at stations that had finished voting. People already waiting in queues were still allowed to cast their ballots. More than 158.7 million Brazilians were eligible to vote, and 54 of the Senate's 81 seats were being contested. The presidential race includes incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. If no presidential candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two will face a runoff on October 25.
