Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival night view of the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília, with its illuminated glass facade, curved white supports and reflecting pool; institutional context for Brazil's presidential election, not a depiction of October 2026 polling, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Brazil opened polling stations on Sunday for the first round of its general elections, with voting running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time across the country. More than 158 million eligible voters are choosing the president, state governors, senators and federal, state or district deputies. Each voter makes six selections, including two for senators, as 54 of the Senate’s 81 seats and all 513 seats in the Chamber of Deputies are contested. Voters already in line at closing time may still cast ballots, and any required presidential or gubernatorial runoff is scheduled for October 25.
