Ethiopian Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa said Ethiopia is completing a large dam on the Magech River for irrigation and water supply. He cited the project as an example of the country’s exercise of its development rights and rejected calls for Ethiopian dam projects to require Egyptian consent. Habtamu said Ethiopia would continue building water infrastructure according to its national priorities, including for irrigation. He also said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was primarily built to generate hydropower. The minister emphasized consideration for downstream populations, describing Egyptians and Sudanese as brothers.
