Ramaphosa Orders New Case Reviews and Safety Audits After Ekurhuleni Killings

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered a national review of unresolved murders, attempted murders, rapes and serious sexual offences involving women and children in a televised address on September 29. He directed officials to identify stalled cases and forensic backlogs within 60 days and prepare recovery plans for priority cases within 90 days. Municipalities must also audit unsafe public spaces within 60 days and address urgent hazards or include them in funded plans within a further 90 days. The measures followed the discovery of 11 women's bodies in Ekurhuleni since July; police have not established that one person committed the killings.
