Fire and Emergency Otago said pilots were being briefed for a return to the Walter Peak Station fire near Queenstown, with ground operations scheduled for 7:30am on October 7. The blaze beside Lake Wakatipu had spread to 390 hectares. About 25 firefighters and incident-management personnel, supported by six helicopters, tackled it the previous day. Assistant District Commander Nic McQuillan said three active areas remained and the fire was not contained, but crews had protected the homestead and nearby buildings. Conditions were relatively calm at the morning update, with stronger winds expected later that morning.
