Eighteen-year-old UAE runner Mariam Kareem won the women's 400m hurdles final at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, on September 28, finishing in 54.31 seconds. The time set an Asian Games record and delivered the United Arab Emirates' first gold medal of the 2026 Games. Kazakhstan's Adelina Zems took silver in 54.58 seconds, while India's Vithya Ramraj earned bronze in 54.75 seconds. Ramraj's result also surpassed the Indian national record set by P. T. Usha at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
