Israel’s Election Panel Votes 18–5 to Disqualify Joint List

Israel’s Central Elections Committee voted 18–5, with one abstention, on Wednesday to disqualify the Joint List from the coming Knesset election after considering a petition from Likud. The petition alleged that the list denied Israel’s character as a Jewish and democratic state and supported armed struggle by an enemy state or terrorist organization, grounds set out in Section 7A of Basic Law: The Knesset. The alliance includes Hadash, Ta’al and Balad. The committee said it would publish its full reasons later; the disqualification requires Supreme Court review before it can take effect.
