India’s August Unemployment Rate Falls to 5% as Rural Joblessness Eases

India’s unemployment rate for people aged 15 and older fell to 5.0% in August from 5.1% in July, according to the National Statistical Office’s monthly labour survey. Rural unemployment declined to 4.1% from 4.5%, the lowest level since January, while urban unemployment edged up to 6.8% from 6.7%. Labour-force participation increased to 55.6% from 55.4%, and the worker-population ratio rose to 52.8% from 52.5%; rural participation reached 58.2% and its worker-population ratio reached 55.8%. The estimates covered 370,160 people, including 211,353 rural and 158,807 urban respondents.
