U.S. Employers Added 162,000 Jobs in August as Unemployment Held at 4.1%

U.S. employers added 162,000 nonfarm jobs in August, while unemployment held at 4.1%, according to the federal employment report released Friday. Food services and drinking places added 59,000 positions, local-government education added 42,000, and manufacturing added 16,000, while information employment fell by 23,000. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% to $37.75 and were 3.1% higher than a year earlier. Revisions raised June payroll growth to 31,000 and changed July’s decline of 23,000 into a gain of 21,000, adding a combined 55,000 jobs to earlier estimates.
