I return from Nepal so moved and overwhelmed by the fortitude, compassion and courage of a country that has refused to give up, a country where civil society has been exemplary- clearing debris, feeding each other, standing in solidarity- a country where the Nepal Army have been real heroes, a country that asks why when they are responsible for 0.1% of greenhouse emissions, when they have 46% forest cover- are they being made to pay the price for global climate crimes. . 9 Dead in 1 Family, 11 day Hunt for Bodies- This is the desperate hunt for DNA tests in Nepal - India is helping with these efforts but such labs are in Kathmandu and the impacted families are traveling over rocks, through rain, on motorcycles from 15 hours away in the mountains to get here. #Nepal-The headmaster who saved the lives of 900 children in Nepal tells me that there were 30 children, all girls, he could not send home from school, as he did with the other students, because they were all hostellers. We report from the Chilime Tunnel near the China border where Indian rescue teams are working side by side to rescue the 6 tunnel workers that are believed to be trapped and possibly still alive. As our cameras caught extraordinary images of a helicopter dropping rescue workers, we realised only after we recorded this moment, that the teams were from our very own India joining the Nepal army in what have been such admirable never-say-die efforts to leave no one behind . After two men were pulled out alive in Trishuli, hoped have risen at this hydropower project just metres away from the mountain village of Syabrubesi which has been flattened by the flash flood. This is one of the remotest corners of Nepal and to reach her took is 15 hours through mountains, mud, rains and rocks as all roads have been wiped out. After that it was a precarious and scary walk from the last motorable point over wet mud and cement before we could look straight into the tunnel. There is a fresh flood warning in Nepal. These warnings have become almost routine across the worst-affected regions, with experts cautioning that the devastation we have already seen may not be the end of it. While we were in Devighat — one of the most sacred places in Nepal — we were suddenly told to leave. Devighat was not just another village caught in the path of the floods. It was a place of deep religious significance, home to the Jalapa Temple, where people from the village would come to pray every single day. Pilgrims and visitors would also make their way here specifically to visit the temple. And now, the Jalapa Temple is no more. And then, as we were standing amid this destruction, there was another warning: The water was rising again. The river’s current was becoming stronger, and the people here could tell that the flow did not look normal to them. In a place that has already seen the river turn deadly, a rising water level immediately creates panic. You can see Nature’s fury still very much at play. For people who have already lost homes, shops, temples and, in many cases, loved ones, the possibility of another flood is not an abstract warning. Most Terrifying, back breaking drive through mud, mountain, rains and rocks continues. This time in reverse. It took us 15 hours to reach Rasuwa, SyabruBesi and the Chileme Tunnel, all places near the border with Tibet / China , the epicentre of the flash flood and now we are trying to get back to Trishuli. We must go the same way we came. And because it has rained all night; the path is even more dangerous and rocky- our wonderful and brave driver Kaman Daju needs our special thanks for his courage and willingness to help us report and bring you these stories. One or two people asked me if we used a helicopter to reach these border areas. I found the question incredulous and bizarre. As we get lurched about over stones and wet mud, steep falls on one side, this will be a gruelling 30 hours in the car going and coming. Often with no network and bad weather. #Nepal GROUND ZERO- I can share GOOD NEWS - UNBELIEVABLE SCENES as a Tunnel worker identified as Sanjay Sah was pulled out ALIVE by rescue teams at the Trishuli-3A Tunnel !! The news was shared by Ram Neupane, a law maker and engineer by training. Hopes rose this morning after rescue teams used listening devices and heard and confirmed voices inside the tunnel. There are now reports that there could be dozens of more workers inside who could be possibly saved soon. And even as we report this there is news in Nepal of a second worker, Kabir also making out out alive. What an amazing job by first responders. Ghost town is a cliche generally but it’s the word that comes closest to describing the situation in Betrawati in Rasuwa in north Nepal, towards the China border. 24 bodies were pulled out from a single house just a day ago. There is not a person in sight, not a house left standing. But what caught my eye and broke my heart was the inanimate objects left behind - containing lived lives within them- like the school and coloring books that belonged to a child who had just finished his homework - or the over turned school bus- I shuddered when I saw that and prayed there were no children in the bus. I am in Rasuwa, at the epicentre of Nepal’s devastating flash floods — the very place from where some of the most haunting images of the disaster emerged online. The videos showed the floodwaters tearing through Shapru Besi with unimaginable force, swallowing roads, homes and entire stretches of the town. Standing here now, the images on our screens suddenly make sense in a way they never could from afar. This is the landscape where the disaster unfolded — a remote mountain valley close to the Tibet-China border, now scarred by the force of the floods. The weather in Nepal has lurched from crazy rain to scorching sun and extreme humidity. Think of how depleting it is for Nepal’s rescue workers who haven’t stopped to take a pause - looking for bodies in the quicksand like mud, rebuilding bridges , shovelling pathways. This today from Devighat, one of Nepal’s most sacred spots, at the confluence of the Tadi and Trishuli rivers. The Jalpa Devi temple that was revered across the region has been swept away. 13 people are missing from village alone and a few days ago, rescue teams pulled out a body they found when they saw just a pair of feet sticking out from a mound of mud.
