Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi hosted Eritrea’s Isaias Afwerki, Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sudan’s Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in New Alamein on October 4. In their joint declaration, the leaders agreed to establish a follow-up mechanism with periodic consultations. The leaders supported Sudan’s unity and a Sudanese-led political process, rejected parallel entities, and backed Somalia’s sovereignty and sustainable funding for the African Union mission there. They affirmed freedom of navigation and said Red Sea governance belongs to coastal states. They also opposed unilateral Nile measures harming downstream water uses.
