Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival May 2008 view of Mekelle Airport's terminal with curved roofs, a lawn and flowers in the foreground, and distant people near the entrance; geographic context, not a depiction of the October 2026 troop movements or fighting, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

A Mekelle resident reported on October 2 that Ethiopian federal forces and allied fighters were approximately 30 kilometres from Tigray’s regional capital. Two residents said banks and shops had closed. The precise frontline location could not be independently verified, and the Ethiopian government and military had not responded to requests for comment. Federal forces are fighting an armed alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Amid wider regional tensions, the African Union Commission urged Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt on October 1 to exercise restraint, keep communication channels open and pursue diplomatic solutions.
