Bolsonaro’s Lawyers Withdraw Bid to Suspend His 27-Year Coup Sentence Hours After Filing

Lawyers for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on September 24 withdrew a request asking Supreme Federal Court Justice Nunes Marques to suspend his 27-year, 3-month sentence for plotting a coup, about two hours after filing it. The filing argued that Bolsonaro, 71, should have been tried by the full court rather than its First Panel, and cited his age, health and late access to evidence. The withdrawal gave no reason and asked that his criminal review, filed in May with Nunes Marques as rapporteur, proceed normally. Bolsonaro has been serving the sentence under humanitarian house arrest in Brasília since March.
