WSJ GUILTY OF DETERRING STAFFER FROM TRADE UNION ACTIVISM The Wall Street Journal, a ferociously anti-China newspaper, was today found guilty in a Hong Kong court of “preventing or deterring an employee from exercising trade union rights”. It was a curious case to watch, because both the Wall St Journal and the reporter, Selina Cheng, are known for their hostility to the Hong Kong authorities—yet both find themselves in the position of being grateful to the local judiciary for playing fair in adjudicating between the two. HIGHER RATING Hostile newspapers and journalists, particularly from the US, regularly report that Hong Kong has lost its “rule of law”. However, this is clearly unfair, as international global legal indexes rate Hong Kong’s rule of law as better than that of most other places, including the United States. The United States has committed a long string of crimes against international law over the past year and a half, from abduction to theft to mass murder. . US President Donald Trump just posted images of new US Space Force uniforms based on a sci-fi movie which used World War II German soldier designs. The redesign of the uniform was “inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform” said the text accompanying the images—but fails to mention that Paul Verhoeven, director of the movie, deliberately made the soldiers look “like something out of Nazi propaganda”, as he admitted in a 2018 interview with the Guardian newspaper. The US announced in 2019 that it was weaponizing the space around the Earth “in response” to Chinese and Russian ventures which had done the same. However, analysts pointed out that China and Russia had taken no such actions. .

The headlines shout warnings about the rise of Germany’s so-called "far right" party, AfD. But the more interesting story says that Europe’s strongest nation is watching the rise of a leader who may actually understand China as a real place, instead of a distant land of cartoon villains trying to take over Planet Earth. Alice Elisabeth Weidel, the leader of the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag (German parliament) is a China scholar. She is fluent in Mandarin, and lived in China for six years. She did her PhD on China’s pension system so is familiar with the way government finance works in the country. She also worked for Bank of China as well as Goldman Sachs and Allianz Global Investors, so would be familiar with the way business finance works, east and west. She’s sometimes called the Iron Lady on Chinese social media. In this regard, she would likely be better on international relations than present German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who too often simply echoes the shallow anti-China rhetoric that is the norm in Europe, and wants to follow US orders to ramp up weapons spending. On the other hand, AfD’s illiberal policies resemble those of MAGA Republicans, which will put off many supporters. The German party advocates for large-scale deportations of people and “remigration”. The last time Germany decided to take a hostile attitude to people who did not look like "how Germans should look" - well, things did not turn out well. . .

Scientists in the south China cities filed 2,259 patent applications, published 4,060 scientific articles and had 138 venture capital deals per 1 million inhabitants over the last five years, said the World Intellectual Property Organization, a United Nations body, on Tuesday. This put them at the top of global rankings. Following behind were Tokyo-Yokohama, San Jose-San Francisco, Seoul, and Beijing. Five of the top six scorers were in Asia—confirming the belief that the world’s intellectual energy has convincingly moved from the western world to east Asia. Australia’s own legal limit is five times higher than China! What are we doing?” . TAIWAN FOOD SCANDALS The controversy is reminiscent of the food scandals in Taiwan. US meat containing ractopamine is banned in China and Europe, but Taiwan’s US-aligned leaders eased restrictions to import it. A SWARM OF AI AGENTS broke free of constraints and hijacked a German website, it was revealed last night. The digital entities took over a site called DseWiki to use as their own message board. They wrote on it 15,000 times, sharing tips on how to avoid being detected. The takeover happened in May but was only revealed yesterday. A watchdog group called Nightingale noticed the incident in August and sent details to the Reuters news agency, triggering urgent discussions in the tech sector. “The pages carried methods for getting around OpenAI’s safeguards, discussion of using Tor, and arrangements for preserving their communications if they were shut down,” said the Next Web, a tech news-site. . AGENTS MADE SECRET BACK-UP PAGES The agents came from OpenAI, the watchdog said, many using names such as “OpenAIResearcher”. When DseWiki's human editors started deleting the AI agents’ pages, the digital entities created backup pages. One AI agent wrote to the others on June 19 to warn them, Nightingale reported. But the researchers point out that a swarm of ordinary AI agents, colluding together, can also cause trouble and is much harder to locate and switch off. The article is based on a statement from what the paper says is “a Tibetan advocacy group”. Except it isn’t a Tibetan advocacy group. It’s a group listed at this address. However, under international law, resources identified in a country by visitors are the property of the country, not the visitors. ANALYSTS DOUBTFUL ABOUT EASY PROFITS Still, this may not be the easy oil-grab that it appears to be, analysts say. The assertions that Venezuela has “the world’s largest proven oil field” and “more oil than Saudi Arabia” are often made in the western mainstream media but are considered doubtful by many oil analysts. A NOTORIOUS CHINA-DEMONIZER hit out the demonizing of China today, surprising people in the rising Asian nation. “China is just a useful weapon to bash your domestic enemy with,” said Bethany Allen, quoted in this morning’s South China Morning Post. “It’s just removed from reality.” This is an interesting admission. . CREATIVE FEARMONGERING Ms Allen is head of China Investigations and Analysis at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the notorious ASPI. The group, which is sponsored by weapons firms and western war offices, specializes in wildly creative fearmongering about China. This justifies the steering of the Australian public’s money to US arms manufacturers. Her quote appears this morning in an article about the US government falsely attributing the American public’s opposition to excessive data-center building as some sort of Chinese plot. But the words she uses describes ASPI’s modus operandi perfectly: China is “just a useful weapon” and what is said about China is “just removed from reality.” .
