Tropical Storm Conditions Hit Hawaii's Big Island as Hurricane Nolo Crawls Offshore

Tropical storm conditions reached Hawaii's Big Island on September 26 as Hurricane Nolo moved slowly west about 145 miles south of South Point, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. The Category 2 storm had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and was forecast to become a major hurricane late Saturday or early Sunday, while its center stays south and southwest of the main islands. Forecasters warned of 10 to 20 inches of rain on the island's east and south, locally up to 25 inches, with life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Ten shelters opened in Hawaii County, and Governor Josh Green said President Trump approved a pre-landfall emergency declaration for four counties.
