Jamaica Says King Charles Referred Slavery Reparations Petition to Privy Council

Jamaica’s culture minister, Olivia Grange, told Parliament on September 22 that King Charles had referred the country’s slavery reparations petition to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Filed on September 7, the petition asks whether transatlantic chattel slavery in Jamaica was lawful under English law, whether forced transport and enslavement breached international obligations, and whether Britain has a legal duty to provide a remedy. Grange said Jamaica is awaiting the committee’s directions on the next steps. The ministry says the petition contains no monetary claim.
