Nigeria Sends State Police Amendment to 36 State Assemblies

Nigeria’s National Assembly sent the 2026 constitutional amendment bill on state police to all 36 state Houses of Assembly. The proposal would create a constitutional route for state police alongside federal policing, with national minimum standards and oversight safeguards. At least 24 state assemblies must approve it under Section 9; lawmakers requested responses within 30 days, although Clerk Kamoru Ogunlana said that was an administrative timeframe rather than a constitutional deadline. The Senate passed the executive version on June 24, and the House followed on July 23 by 311 votes; the amendment is not yet law.
