Russia Says Africa Corps Helped Niger Suppress Niamey Mutiny

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Nigerien troops repelled August 29 attacks on government facilities in Niamey with help from the Russian Defense Ministry’s Africa Corps. Russian Ambassador Viktor Voropayev said the command at Air Base 101 requested assistance from Russian personnel during the mutiny. He said Niger’s armed-forces chief of general staff, ground-forces chief and base commander later thanked Africa Corps personnel for helping suppress the uprising. Nigerien Defense Minister Salifou Modi said security forces contained the revolt and regained control of the targeted facilities; the Russian ministry pledged continued support for President Abdourahamane Tiani’s government.
