Zambia's electoral commission declared President Hakainde Hichilema the winner of a second five-year term with 2,965,326 votes, ahead of Brian Mundubile's 1,856,217. Hichilema cleared the required 50% threshold and the result was declared at 2:41 a.m. on August 18. The count had been suspended for several hours after attacks on polling officials and reported ballot-box thefts, and opposition officials were arrested during an election-night raid.
