Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of Jay Clayton in a dark suit and blue tie with an American flag behind him, based on his archival May 2017 SEC portrait; contextual illustration, not a depiction of the October 2026 task-force appointment, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will lead the White House’s new “Super Intelligence Force,” effectively becoming the administration’s AI czar. The task force has 120 days to assess artificial intelligence’s risks and opportunities and recommend the federal government’s responsibilities for the technology. His selection follows a White House meeting where AI industry executives agreed to voluntary safety standards that President Donald Trump described as morally binding. Trump has opposed new regulation despite calls from industry leaders for federal guardrails, and previously said the planned force would help the industry rather than hinder its growth.
