Trump Administration Appeals Block on Mail-Voting Restrictions

The Trump administration filed notice that all federal defendants will appeal a Massachusetts judge’s order temporarily blocking new U.S. Postal Service mail-ballot rules. Judge Indira Talwani’s order pauses specified envelope-design, voter-data, portal-registration and noncompliance provisions for 14 days for elections on or before November 3. The court said most plaintiff states had already ordered ballots and some had to begin mailing them the following week. Talwani found the plaintiffs likely to succeed on claims that USPS lacked authority for the rule and that its requirements were unconstitutional; preliminary-injunction motions remain under advisement.
