Tanzania Commissions 2,115 MW Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, Built With Domestic Funds

President Samia Suluhu Hassan formally commissioned the 2,115 megawatt Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant on the Rufiji River in Pwani Region on August 22, the Ministry of Energy said. Its nine 235 megawatt units were built between June 2019 and March 2025 for 7.452 trillion shillings, about 3.35 billion dollars, financed entirely from Tanzania's own budget. Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi said national generating capacity now exceeds peak demand by 2,375 megawatts, and that Tanzania has agreed to sell power to Zambia and trade electricity with Kenya. The ministry says the plant supplied about 44.9 percent of grid electricity in the year to May 31.
