U.S. and Venezuela Discuss Major Stake in Oil Fields

The United States and Venezuela are discussing a plan that could give the United States a large stake in Venezuelan oil fields, according to people familiar with the private negotiations who asked not to be identified. The proposed arrangement would extend the Trump administration’s influence over the post-Maduro government and the country’s vast energy reserves. One structure under discussion is a 100-year lease on several oil fields. The talks are ongoing, no agreement has been announced, and the terms of any deal could still change.
