Israel Signs Deal to Supply Cyprus With New Patrol Vessel and Upgrade Existing Ship

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of the Cyprus offshore patrol vessel Commodore Andreas Ioannides P61 seen broadside at sea in an archival January 2025 photograph; contextual view of the existing vessel designated for upgrade, not the newly ordered vessel or the October 2026 signing, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes.

Israel and Cyprus signed an agreement in Cyprus on October 26 for a new offshore patrol vessel built by Israel Shipyards and equipped with Rafael naval systems. The deal also covers upgrades to systems aboard Cyprus’s existing Israel Shipyards-built patrol vessel, IOANNIDES. Israeli Defense Ministry Director General Amir Baram and Stelios Kountouris, acting permanent secretary of Cyprus’s Defence Ministry, signed the agreement. The ministries said the new and upgraded vessels would support expanded patrol, surveillance, and search-and-rescue missions; the announcement did not disclose a contract price or delivery date.
