Asher Grunis Leaves Submarine Inquiry for Medical Reasons; Zvi Zylbertal Named Chair

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an archival elevated view of Israel’s Supreme Court building, entrance bridge and gardens in Jerusalem, rendered in warm ochre and slate-blue pastel strokes; institutional context, not a depiction of the inquiry leadership change.

Retired Israeli Supreme Court president Asher Grunis is leaving the state commission investigating submarine and naval vessel procurement for medical reasons. The judicial authority said his medical circumstances would prevent him from attending hearings in the coming months, and he requested a replacement to avoid delaying the commission’s work. Supreme Court President Isaac Amit appointed retired Supreme Court justice Zvi Zylbertal, who was already a commission member, to lead it. The leadership change concerns the state inquiry into procurement decision-making, which is separate from the criminal proceedings involving the submarine affair.
