Israel Police arrested 17 suspects on Monday, including a municipality head in central Israel, his wife and the municipal economic company’s chief executive. Seven additional suspects were detained for questioning. Lahav 433’s National Fraud Investigation Unit brought a covert investigation lasting more than a year into its public phase. Police suspect bribery, fraud and breach of trust, money laundering and tax offenses, alleging predominantly cash payments in exchange for lucrative municipal tenders. Investigators also suspect criminal figures’ involvement in the bribery mechanism, procurement and violent offenses; searches at offices and businesses seized money and property.
