Ratko Mladić Dies in The Hague While Serving Life Sentence for Genocide

Bosnian Serb wartime commander Ratko Mladić died Thursday in the UN detention hospital in The Hague while serving a life sentence. The UN tribunal’s appeals chamber had affirmed his convictions for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including responsibility for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide and the siege of Sarajevo. At least 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed at Srebrenica. Mladić had remained in UN custody since 2011, after spending about 16 years as a fugitive, and had suffered multiple strokes and repeated hospitalizations.
