Today, the rewards I promised our D’Tigress have been fully redeemed. Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja. For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year. We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented. That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept. We are also concluding the outstanding cash rewards for our Super Falcons. The Super Falcons players and officials have already received the title documents to their house allocations and National Honours certificates. Likewise, the promise of houses and national honours I made to Super Eagles players has since been redeemed. Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word. My promise to every Nigerian Athelete is make NIGERIA proud, and come back to a grateful Nation. Congratulations once again, our athletes. I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of my dear sister and colleague, Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania @SuluhuSamia. I know what this loss means to President Samia and her family. She has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and the family one of its pillars. For almost five decades he stood quietly beside her, through every season of her service to Tanzania. A companionship of that depth becomes part of who a person is. To lose it is to lose a portion of oneself, and I feel for her deeply. On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, and on behalf of my family, I extend my deepest condolences to President Samia, her children, the Hassan family and the people of Tanzania. At moments such as this, the bonds that unite us as Africans matter even more. Nigeria mourns with Tanzania and stands with President Samia and her family in this hour of grief. May the Almighty Allah grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest, comfort all those he has left behind, and give President Samia and her family the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss. I welcome the African Union’s announcement that the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) will officially launch on October 7. @_AfricanUnion In February, I made the case in the Financial Times for an African credit rating agency. In May, at the Africa CEO Forum @africaceoforum in Kigali, I spoke again about the need for Africa to build financial institutions that understand our economies and can assess our risks properly. AfCRA is another step towards that goal. Africa is not asking for favourable ratings. We are asking for fair ratings, grounded in our fundamentals and in the reforms our economies are actually carrying out. AfCRA must now earn the confidence of global capital. 4/ In the next few weeks, we are addressing some of the challenges facing our vulnerable population by providing cheaper means of transport, ramping up food production and implementing relief programmes that will touch lives at the grassroots. The economy is on an irreversible path towards even stronger growth but growth must be something every Nigerian can feel at the dining table and in their pocket. 3/ We are building roads, railways and superhighways that will last for a long time. In our universities, for the first time in a long time, there are no strikes. Our children are in class. Through NELFUND, student loans are putting education within reach, while affordable credit is going to our civil servants through CreditCorp. Yet, at precisely the point when the evidence shows that our reforms are beginning to work, some in the opposition are promising Nigerians that they will reverse them. We will not turn back. We will not return Nigeria to the policies and distortions we inherited and have spent the last three years correcting. I will not dignify the leaders of the opposition who now seek to take Nigeria back to its dark past by mentioning their names. They know themselves. Our responsibility now is to ensure that these improving numbers translate more quickly into the lives of our people.
2/ In the past three years, we tried to do the hard part by implementing the necessary reforms to stabilise the economy. Now the economy is stabilised, and we have laid the foundation for a prosperous nation. We didn’t do the reforms to create challenges, but to ensure prosperity reaches all our people. The results are becoming very clear. Because of those tough decisions, Nigeria today has trade surpluses. Our foreign reserves are at their highest in 17 years. Our credit rating has moved up several notches. Investors who left are returning. Oil and gas production is increasing.
THE RENEWED HOPE AGENDA IS WORKING Fellow Nigerians, Our economy grew by 4.43% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.23% in the same period last year. Growth was recorded across agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services, which now make the largest contribution to our GDP. In nominal terms, our GDP reached ₦119.27 trillion, up 18.43% from ₦100.7 trillion in the same period last year. These numbers matter because they show where our economy is going after three years of difficult but necessary reforms.
I am delighted to receive the news that the fifteen members of the National Youth Service Corps and six other innocent and law-abiding Nigerians abducted last week in Kogi State by some criminal elements have regained their freedom. The well-coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) operation carried out by a combined team of personnel of the military, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services, and local vigilantes safely rescued all twenty-one abductees, made up of eight males and thirteen females, from the den of kidnappers in the forests of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State this afternoon. The corps members and other rescued individuals are currently receiving medical attention before they are reunited with their families. While the abductees have been safely rescued, our gallant security forces are still on the trail of the routed kidnappers, in line with my directive to sustain the pressure on all criminal elements. Those responsible will face the full weight of the law, and our security agencies will pursue everyone who aided this crime. My administration remains committed to ensuring that every Nigerian can travel across our country without fear. I wholeheartedly commend the combined SAR team for their courage and appreciate families and loved ones of the abductees for their understanding during the ordeals of their loved ones. As I share in the relief and joy of the parents and loved ones of the rescued individuals, I want to once again, assure parents and loved ones of our dedicated corps members that my Administration remains committed to ensuring the safety of their lives and property, as well as those of other Nigerians. “CHEAPER FUEL MUST MEAN CHEAPER TRANSPORT FARES”: PRESIDENT TINUBU, GOVERNORS MOVE TO CUT TRANSPORT FARES NATIONWIDE I am pleased with my discussion with the Governors’ Forum this afternoon. The Governors have, on their own initiative, resolved to take immediate measures to bring down the cost of transportation in their states, with a strong focus on leveraging the cost benefits of CNG and electric vehicles. The Federal Government is already investing significantly in this energy transition. Through the Presidential CNG Initiative, over 120,000 vehicles have been converted nationwide, with more than 100,000 additional conversion kits in the works. At the same time, we continue to expand conversion centres and refuelling infrastructure nationwide. The Federal Government, through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, is currently financing more than 100 gas projects across the country, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations. In May, I commissioned four of these projects in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri, including a 15-station refuelling network in Lagos and an Abuja facility that can serve 1,000 cars and tricycles and 50 trucks and buses a day. I have also directed the additional rollout of another 500 CNG refuelling stations nationwide in addition to the 500 stations ordered earlier in the year by the Fund, bringing the programme to 1,000 stations across the country. Intra-state transport is where Nigerians feel the cost most directly, and it is where the states hold the levers. I am encouraged that our Governors are moving to bring these benefits closer to the people they serve. We have agreed to set up a joint Federal and State committee to begin implementing these measures immediately. A vehicle running on CNG spends 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel than one running on petrol. From October 1, our goal is that Nigerians begin to partake in those savings through lower transport fares. We have agreed that cheaper fuel should result in cheaper fares! Each tier of government must keep doing its part and work together for the benefit of every Nigerian. Nigeria First. 3/ Since we reset the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission and the RHINSE philosophy, we have seen meaningful progress across other sports. Football, our most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, must also make similar progress. I have therefore directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the NFF Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration while facilitating a broad and consultative reform process. @thenff @NatSportsComm
2/ The reform will strengthen governance and administration, improve stakeholder representation and accountability, rebuild development pathways and strengthen our domestic competitions. Our exceptional football talent must be supported by institutions capable of turning that talent into sustained success.
PROTECTING FOOTBALL, RESTORING NATIONAL PRIDE Football occupies a special place in our national life. It brings Nigerians together across generations and communities, and our country has never lacked talent, passion or support for the game. Yet, our results have too often fallen short of what Nigeria should expect. I have therefore directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following our repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments. The problems are structural, and our response must address them.
3/3. I have also directed the Service Chiefs to give me regular briefings on the progress of the rescue operation until all those abducted are accounted for. Terror will not cow Nigeria. We will defend our people, protect our communities, and uphold the sanctity of human life. My prayers are with the people of Niger State at this difficult time.
