Qatar’s Economy Contracts 7% as Hydrocarbon GDP Falls 25.8%

Qatar’s real economy contracted 7.0% year on year in the first quarter of 2026, as hydrocarbon GDP fell 25.8%, according to figures released by the National Planning Council. The council linked the hydrocarbon decline to restrictions affecting regional shipping and exports. Non-hydrocarbon GDP grew 3.5%, led by 6.2% growth in construction and 9.0% in wholesale and retail trade. Construction contributed QAR 1.374 billion and 1.2 percentage points to non-hydrocarbon growth, while trade contributed QAR 1.314 billion and 1.1 points; real estate grew 6.1% and financial and insurance activity rose 4.8%.
