Japan Seeks Record ¥8.9 Trillion Defense Budget Focused on AI and Drones

Japan’s Defense Ministry requested ¥8.9 trillion for the fiscal year starting April 2027, its largest-ever initial budget proposal and the final request under the current five-year buildup. The plan prioritizes AI-assisted command systems, intelligence and attack drones, long-range missiles, integrated air and missile defense, space and cyber capabilities. It includes an “AI Orchestrator,” uncrewed surveillance and strike systems, and development of a submarine-launched hypersonic guided missile. The ministry says uncrewed equipment could reduce personnel exposure and costs while supplementing a shrinking military workforce; final allocations will be decided during budget compilation.
