USPS Stops Work on Mail-Ballot System After Supreme Court Ruling

Postmaster General David Steiner said the U.S. Postal Service stopped work on a computer system intended to check mail ballots against state-submitted voter data. A September 16 employee memo said the agency would not enforce the new rules in the 2026 federal election and would continue handling election mail under established protocols. The Supreme Court denied the government's stay request on September 14, leaving a preliminary injunction in force. A USPS notice published September 17 says officials will not implement the challenged ballot-mail rule while the injunction remains effective.
