Tropical Storm Moke Drenches Hawaii Days After Lala Kills Two

Tropical Storm Moke passed about 320 miles (515 kilometers) south-southwest of Hilo on August 23 with sustained winds near 40 mph (65 kph), close enough to bring another round of heavy rain to Hawaii's Big Island. Forecasters warned of up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain, with isolated totals near 15 inches (38 centimeters), creating a risk of life-threatening floods and mudslides. The storm followed Hurricane Lala, which flooded communities, damaged roads and power lines, and was linked to two deaths in Hawaii. County officials opened shelters and urged residents to stay off roads.
