India's balancing act. BRICS/Xi trip but around the same time - Quad sherpa mtg + Logistics Network TTX - 🇮🇳🇯🇵 air force ex: Japan fighter aircraft in India for first time - 🇮🇳 navy chief in 🇦🇺 - 🇮🇳🇺🇸 army exercise: incl at Auli ~100km from LAC; first time YA in 2 theaters) https://t.co/8LFIeFFgl5
I suspect there will be more in their media once Xi is there. A key purpose will have nothing to do w/ India but as a signal to the world & esp the US -- China will want BRICS/India trip to add to the wind at his back ahead of his meeting with Trump
Reason I'm wondering is that China announced Xi's trip for the SCO summit (Sep. 1-2) on Aug. 26, i.e., about 4 days before he was scheduled to leave for it... I don't know if this is a protocol thing or something else (i.e. waiting for India to announce first)
"A bipartisan group of US.lawmakers has asked USG to ban several [Indian] hack-for-hire firms — cos. that carry out cyberattacks on behalf of paying clients... The lawmakers’ letter said that the...companies 'operated at the behest of the Qatari govt'" https://t.co/wu0ncKxgtO https://t.co/wRw1MyClss
India's amb. to China Vikram Doraiswami writes in Global Times re India's capabilities, achievements, "predictability for investors" Says BRICS oppor. to deepen C-I coop; "peace & tranquility in the China-India border areas provide an essential foundation for this partnership" https://t.co/xVu8S0noZw
Is Putin not enough of a draw that Russia's channel in India has to use a deepfake of King Charles to pitch its new offering? (Also clearly not heeding @narendramodi's warnings against AI-generated deepfakes) https://t.co/q37I39RnNu
“Industry argues 80% of products will be classified as high in [sugar, salt, fat] under the current system, hurting India's image" When the food industry deploys "India ki image kharab ho jayegi" instead of proper labeling or better quality... 🤦🏽♀️
"Even as PM Narendra Modi is likely to host President Xi Jinping soon, New Delhi has of late allowed one of the top leaders of the 1989 pro-democracy uprising at Tiananmen Square in Beijing to visit India... Wang [Dan] met the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala" https://t.co/eV2bXmHUw0 https://t.co/aV0DTVtBpf
2/ "The Indian and US armies will...put the same troops through the Rajasthan desert and the Himalayan heights in a single edition of their annual Yudh Abhyas exercise, a two-theatre format being attempted for the first time." https://t.co/ByFUcdO2e9
Acc to reports, upcoming 🇮🇳🇺🇸 army ex YUDH ABHYAS will cover 2 theatres for the first time... "at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges near Bikaner before the contingents move to Auli in Uttarakhand, roughly 95km from the Line of Actual Control with China, sources said" [link below] https://t.co/kDv8NAUedl
Glad to see the Singaporean PM speak out against anti-Indian racism, which seems to be a global phenomenon thx to social media. Wish more US politicians did the same. And hope the community here asks pols who seek our $$ & votes if they have done/said sthg against this rhetoric.
There's an individual who posts on India who works at China's NDRC. His X bio downplays that he works for the Chinese govt. And it works. First, The Print described him as a commentator; now The Economist describes him as a graduate student. 🤷🏽♀️
"As everyone agreed, China needs to be studied, assessed, observed, engaged purely through an Indian lens." Been hearing this in India for yrs. This requires beaucoup investment in scholarships, research, academia/think tank positions, mentoring. Hope that investment is made.
"Equal Earth" map being circulated has also created a kerfuffle in India, which voted for the resolution but has now said that didn't constitute an endorsement of any specific map. Incidentally, China probably won't endorse that map either despite also voting yes for the res.
If you're wondering about state of play re US-India trade agmt, boils down to this from 🇮🇳 POV as per the commerce minister: "As soon as the US is able to give us the preferential rate, in comparison to our competition, we will finalise the BTA and announce the final details"
In India, Europe is seen as part of the answer to the US use of sanctions. At the same time, Europe is pushing for those sanctions, including against India.
"House Speaker Mike Johnson on Thursday cast doubt on the [Graham Sanctioning Russia]...bill coming to a vote before the Nov. 3 midterm congressional elections" Also read: @petereharrell's https://t.co/FNt1alq28w
"Russia & India...have built a functioning payments infrastructure using roubles and rupees, which now account for 96% of bilateral trade" "22 Russian banks...and 17 Indian banks are currently servicing bilateral trade."
If he really thinks Hormuz disruption hasn't affected India... & that Delhi's intervened in various ways to ensure it didn't affect India even more....
A truly useful initiative. I hope there'll also be access to the Indira & Rajiv Gandhi papers in the future. One note: archive is searchable & temptation will be to focus on a niche term/issue but I'd encourage ppl to read SWJN vols in their entirety - better research practice.
Given the recent reports re move twds component manufacturing incentives/emphasis, will be interesting to watch wages impact.
Haven't seen it get much attention but India has been increasingly concerned about commercial shipping in the Black Sea (for both maritime trade & seafarer safety reasons) and increasingly active on that question. See below related @MEAIndia @narendramodi @DrSJaishankar activity https://t.co/bW9obOeqIC
After @DrSJaishankar's visit to Russia and PM Modi's meeting with Putin -- and ahead of Putin's trip to India for the BRICS summit -- MEA announces that the Indian foreign minister is heading to Ukraine... https://t.co/fyjZJQZFWf
Like I said, if Russia escalates vs Europe, this will adversely affect India's FP and diversification strategy. India sees Russia as a key long-standing partner but Europe now crucial for Indian goals too (e.g. Germany alone is one of India's top export markets).
Even as Indian PM Modi called for an end to the war, an Indian citizen is killed in a Russian strike in Ukraine...
