Canada’s Counter-Tariffs Take Effect on C$27.6 Billion in U.S. Goods

Canada’s counter-tariffs on C$27.6 billion of U.S. imports took effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8. Rates of 15%, 25% and 50% match corresponding U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, with steel and aluminum items already at 25% rising to 50%. Products covered include dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, electronics, furniture and clothing, while existing auto counter-tariffs continue. The action responds to U.S. 50% tariffs on C$27.6 billion of Canadian goods that took effect August 22, and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne described Canada’s measures as dollar-for-dollar and rate-for-rate.
