Spain Reveals It Summoned Morocco’s Ambassador Over Ceuta Claims

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told Spain’s Congress that the Foreign Ministry summoned Morocco’s ambassador on August 21 over sovereignty claims about Ceuta and Melilla made by two Moroccan ministers. Sánchez said Spain has no solid evidence that Moroccan authorities planned or carried out the mass crossing into Ceuta, though Moroccan gendarmes allowed crossings on July 30 before regaining control. He said intelligence services are examining whether the initial lapse reflected incapacity or deliberate inaction and promised to publish the relevant reports. Sánchez also pledged tighter border controls, a fixed maritime barrier and accommodation for another 1,500 migrants within two weeks.
